The Best Medieval Baby Gifts
There are two types of medieval baby gifts. The first type is those gifts that were
actually given to mothers and children in medieval days. The second are those we might categorize as
simply depicting interesting and memorable scenes and people from the medieval
period.
Real Gifts
In the fifteen hundreds there were not a whole lot of things
that could be given as a baby gift.
Medieval baby gifts were, therefore, quite rare. However, certain things
were given on occasion to assist the family in the care of their newborn. Medieval baby gifts were typically home made
items such as blankets or other clothing.
It was not until the eighteen hundreds that baby showers became popular
or were even considered. Therefore,
medieval baby gifts were presented directly to the mother or father before the
baby was born. In some cases, medieval
baby gifts were just offers of assistance as opposed to actual physical
gifts. Much of this depended on the
person’s station in life in relation to the presenter of the gifts. Often the
poorer the environment, the more likely the offer would have been in the form
of offered assistance or fresh food from their gardens.
Another aspect of traditional medieval baby gifts that is
not often considered is the lack of gift stores. In fact, a gift store in the fifteen hundreds
was more likely the gift cart with the selection of baby gifts minimal. It is, therefore, not surprising that most
gifts were hand made.
Modern Baby Gifts
The current version of medieval baby gifts are gifts for
babies and their future families that imitate, in some manner, a person or
activity from the fifteen hundreds. For
instance, many medieval baby gifts are tee shirts with logos or pictures on
them that depict people of activities from the period. For example, princess shirts are a popular
form of modern medieval baby gifts that are given to the mom and in the form of
baby clothes for the newborn.
Another popular form of baby gift is furniture or wall
coverings that may depict medieval scenes or famous people. Such medieval baby gifts are quite common and
in fact are considered rather fashionable.
Scenes that are typical are romantic scenes of courtiers and kings. Other famous figures such as, Sir Lancelot,
Arthur and Guinevere are also quite often used as primary subjects. Sometimes even an entire baby’s room may be
done with a medieval theme, and in such a situation the modern form of medieval
baby gifts would be completely appropriate.
